TBR Day – Blood Is the New Black: Valerie Stivers

Title: Blood Is the New BlackCropperCapture[3]

Author: Valerie Stivers

Year published: 2007

Genre: Chick Lit/Vampire

Why did you get this book? I got this book on one of my book binges…(before my Kindle investment)

Did you enjoy the book? It was entertaining. I’ll donate it to the 2nd hand shop or the library soon. I guess it was too much chick lit for me and not enough vampire. It reminded me a lot of Ugly Betty does vampire….Vanilla Vamp.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again? Yes, the author was new to me. I might read something else form her, it would depend on the cover blurb.

Are you keeping it or passing it on? I’ll donate it for sure.

Why did you wait so long to read it? I had actually started it and put it down a bunch of times before I made the push to finish it.

Description (Random House)

When nice-girl Kate McGraw finds herself working at Tasty, a magazine with its finger on the pulse of modern style, she’s finally able to put her flair for fashion to good use. But can she keep up with the Tasty staffers? Ethereally beautiful and extremely emaciated, they stay out all night, never look the worse for wear, and are always dressed to kill.

Like everyone else around the office, Kate finds herself begrudgingly reading dispatches from a snarky industry blog that dubs her colleagues “bloodthirsty vamps.” She knows they don’t mean it literally, but . . . she’s heard whispers of “fashion murders” and she has noticed strange things around the office: Like, why doesn’t her boss get laminates to fix her sharp teeth? Why are the blinds always drawn, and why is there a no-garlic policy in the cafeteria?

As well-dressed bodies begin to pile up near all the hot places, Kate has to wonder if there’s a serial killer loose with a grudge against the stylish. Or if the truth is even more sinister: Are Kate’s coworkers actually undead? And, if so, can she design an exit strategy before she finds herself at Tasty forever?

TBR Day- Torchwood: Border Princes

BorderPrinces Title: Torchwood: Border Princes

Author: Dan Abnett

Year published: 2007

Genre: Sci-Fi/Tv Series

Blurb: Follow Torchwood as they attempt to avert global disaster again, as Jack says it’s a 27 on a scale of 10.

Why did you get this book? I love the Torchwood series and I was looking for a way to get a Torchwood fix between seasons.

Did you enjoy the book? Yeah, sort of. I think the biggest issue that I had with this book is that it didn’t suck me into the story (Not literally, for those of you that have seen the show). I did like that I could imagine the scene based on the dialogue, I feel that the author stayed true to the characters.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again? If it was another Torchwood book, yes. But I am not sure about seeking out something that he wrote. I guess it would depend on the story.

Are you keeping it or passing it on? I will probably keep it.

Why did you wait so long to read it? I had so many others to read….. :P

TBR Day: REVIEW: Candy Girl: A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper – Diablo Cody

Title:
Candy Girl : A Year in the Life of an Unlikely Stripper

Author: Diablo Cody

Year published: 2006

Genre: Memoir

Blurb: This is a story of a 24 year old woman who dared to bare it all as a stripper. After working as a copy editor at an Advertising agency Diablo Cody decided that there was more to life than the 9 to 5 grind of the cubicle maze and became a stripper.

Why did you get this book? I saw it at the used book store and the title grabbed me. At the time I had not heard of Diablo Cody, but the book looked like an interesting diversion.

Did you enjoy the book? Actually, I did. It was an interesting look into life as a sex industry. Her observations and writing style was entertaining.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again? Yes, this author is a new author for me. I would have to be in the right mood and the book would have to have an interesting hook to draw me in…

Are you keeping it or passing it on? I will recycle this to the used bookstore that I got it from. I have no desire to put this in the re-read pile. While interesting and well written, the subject matter is not the stuff of a comfort read for me.

Why did you wait so long to read it? It was an impulse purchase and there always seemed to be something more suited to my mood.

Anything else? I really did enjoy this book. I would recommend it to anyone that wants to read a memoir of a Minnesota stripper.
