Fall of Light: Nina Kiriki Hoffman

FallOfLight

First off, I have to say that I love Nina Kiriki Hoffman’s writing. I have read several of her works and I am not disappointed with Fall of Light. The world that she has created is unique and interesting for the reader. It’s not your standard cookie cutter magic user universe, there are facets that are beautiful and awful. The reader’s exploration of these facets is the enjoyable part of the experience.

Her latest job requires turning Corvus Weather into a dark god of the forest. But when Corvus’s performance becomes too convincing—on set and off—Opal realizes he’s not acting. Something has taken possession of Corvus. Something sinister tied to the town’s past, with the ability to absorb the very essence of life. Something Opal doesn’t have enough power to confront, much less drive from the man she has fallen in love with.

Bloodhound: Tamora Pierce

Bloodhound

I thought that the story was an entertaining glimpse into the character’s life. The characters are enjoyable and the story does not follow a predictable path.

If you enjoyed the first book or the author’s other work, you will enjoy this series.

Things I enjoyed: I enjoyed that the main character went on a mission in a new environment.

Things I didn’t enjoy: It took me a while to get used to the diary format of the book.

Reason for reading: I loved the first in the series.

A Homemade Life: Molly Wizenberg

When I first discovered the blog Orangette, I was charmed by the author and her AHomeMadeLifewriting style. I thought that her thought about food an life were insightful and poignant. So, I made a point to add her blog to my RSS reader and check in periodically to check out what was new with her blog and to get an occasional recipe.

Several months ago I saw that she was preparing a book. At the time I assumed that it was a cook book and stuck it in my wish list. As the release date came closer I realized that her photography would not be included in the book, this dampened my enthusiasm a bit. I love good food porn.

When I was at the store a few weeks ago I decided to check out A Homemade Life, and see if I would like it. After sitting down for a bit reading the first few pages, I realized that this was exactly the kind of book that I would enjoy (even with out the food porn).

I took it home and read it over 2 weeks, and really enjoyed it. This one will go in the shelf in my kitchen with my cookbooks, even though it’s more a memoir. I WILL master the Aunt Bill candy recipe, come hell or high water.

The book reads like a series of vignettes in the author’s life with a recipe associated to the memory. A lot of the memories are touching and the recipes look delicious.

If you like non-fiction food writing or the blog Orangette, I really recommend this book to you.

Things enjoyed: The memories and feelings that the author conveys while speaking of food are terrific. I thought that the writing was engaging and thoughtful.

Things I didn’t enjoy: When I finished the book, I felt that there should be a little more…maybe an afterword. It just needed something to tie up the book.

Reason for reading: I visit the author’s blog and was intrigued to hear about her book.

When Molly Wizenberg’s father died of cancer, everyone told her to go easy on herself, to hold off on making any major decisions for a while. But when she tried going back to her apartment in Seattle and returning to graduate school, she knew it wasn’t possible to resume life as though nothing had happened. So she went to Paris, a city that held vivid memories of a childhood trip with her father, of early morning walks on the cobbled streets of the Latin Quarter and the taste of her first pain au chocolat. She was supposed to be doing research for her dissertation, but more often, she found herself peering through the windows of chocolate shops, trekking across town to try a new pâtisserie, or tasting cheeses at outdoor markets, until one evening when she sat in the Luxembourg Gardens reading cookbooks until it was too dark to see, she realized that her heart was not in her studies but in the kitchen.

At first, it wasn’t clear where this epiphany might lead. Like her long letters home describing the details of every meal and market, Molly’s blog Orangette started out merely as a pleasant pastime. But it wasn’t long before her writing and recipes developed an international following. Every week, devoted readers logged on to find out what Molly was cooking, eating, reading, and thinking, and it seemed she had finally found her passion. But the story wasn’t over: one reader in particular, a curly-haired, food-loving composer from New York, found himself enchanted by the redhead in Seattle, and their email correspondence blossomed into a long-distance romance.

In A Homemade Life: Stories and Recipes from My Kitchen Table, Molly Wizenberg recounts a life with the kitchen at its center. From her mother’s pound cake, a staple of summer picnics during her childhood in Oklahoma, to the eggs she cooked for her father during the weeks before his death, food and memories are intimately entwined. You won’t be able to decide whether to curl up and sink into the story or to head straight to the market to fill your basket with ingredients for Cider-Glazed Salmon and Pistachio Cake with Honeyed Apricots.

The Shadow Queen: Anne Bishop

I really enjoy the books from the Black Jewels universe. I think that this one won’t detract from my enjoyment of the series, even if I didn’t love this book. I did enjoy this book but not as much as some of the others in the series.

I hope that there will be more in the Black Jewels universe, I would like to read more about Dena Nehele and it’s restoration.

Things enjoyed: I enjoyed the story between Cassie and Gray. I really liked the idea of redeeming the people of Dena Nehele.

Things I didn’t enjoy: I felt that there was too much story with Daemon and Jaenelle. It really detracted from the story of Cassie and Gray.  TheShadowQueen

Reason for reading: I loved the Black Jewels books and I wanted to continue with this series.

Need: Carrie Jones

I read Need a couple of weeks ago and I enjoyed it. I liked that the pixies are not nice beings. This is a quick and enjoyable read and readers will enjoy the menace of the pixies, just as I did.

If Carrie Jones writes more in this universe, I will definitely read them.

Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.  Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

Fade: Lisa McMann

Fade

Sometimes a book can just resonate with you and there isn’t a clear reason why, other times you know exactly why you loved it. As for Lisa McMann’s series I can’t be sure exactly why I love it, with it’s the story, the characters, or the Ann Arbor references….but I love it.

The Exchange: Graham Joyce

TheExchange

I think that Graham Joyce’s novel The Exchange is a wonderful read. It continues in his typical style. The author delivers his signature creepiness in a coming of age story of a teen girl. The reader follows the girl on a journey of self-awareness that is full of excitement. The Exchange didn’t creep me out as much as his Tooth Fairy novel, but I enjoyed it.

A taut, otherworldly thriller set in contemporary England.

Caz and her best friend Lucy have a secret. Late at night, they break into strangers’ homes—not to steal anything, just for the rush. Then Caz gets caught in the act by elderly Mrs. Tranter, and before she knows it, the old woman has snapped a silver bracelet around her wrist. Caz can’t remove it, no matter what she does; and then it becomes part of her, sinking into her skin like a tattoo. Worst and most unsettling of all, it’s given her an unpredictable kind of ESP. She can see into people’s inner lives, whether she wants to or not. The Exchange is gritty magical realism with a sense of humor—just right for fans of Holly Black and Sonya Hartnett.

Graceling: Kristin Cashore

I impulse bought Graceling around Thanksgiving and since then I have read it twice. I really enjoyed this book, I am looking forward to the next in the Graceling world. The book tells the tale of a girl who is different in a land where differences are not valued. I loved watching her break preconceived molds that others placed on her and accept her differences as gifts. Along the way to acceptance the girl finds struggle, conflict, evil, love, and friendship. It’s a terrific journey.

Sunshine: Robin McKinley

Sunshine

It looks like Robin McKinley’s Sunshine will be re-released in October 2008. This makes me wonder if this is a standard re-release or is a prelude to a second book? I hope there is a second, but I would not be surprised if Sunshine was it. I once read (somewhere) that Robin McKinley was not going to do another book in the Sunshine universe, because the characters had no more to say. I would love another Sunshine book, but there does not need to be one this story holds it’s own as a standalone.

Sunshine is one of my favorite books, I have read it numerous times and still am not bored with it. I love the post apocalyptic mage wars universe with the bad patches. I think that the characters are well drawn and have a depth that intrigues me.  One of my favorite scenes is with the landlady (Miss Yelna?), I love the reveal of her nature. I also like the imagery during one of the battles of the family and boyfriend offering power/support to the heroine.

If you have not had a chance to read Sunshine, I recommend that you get a copy and read it. It really is one of the best vampire books that I have read.

Description (Barnes & Noble)

There are places in the world where darkness rules, where it’s unwise to walk. But there hadn’t been any trouble out at the lake for years, and Sunshine just needed a spot where she could be alone with her thoughts. Vampires never entered her mind.
